  4. Exhaust Stroke: The piston moves upward again, pushing out the burned exhaust gases. The exhaust valve opens, expelling the gases from the cylinder and preparing for the next intake cycle.

III. Combustion Process

The combustion process of a single-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine is relatively complex, involving three main stages: mixing, ignition, and combustion.

  1. Mixing Stage: Fuel is injected into the cylinder via the fuel injector, where it mixes with the compressed air to form a combustible mixture. Diesel engines utilize compression ignition, where the fuel ignites spontaneously under high temperature and pressure.

  2. Ignition Stage: As the piston approaches top dead center, the fuel injected by the fuel injector is heated to a high temperature and pressure by the compressed air, reaching the conditions for spontaneous ignition. Ignition is initiated by the atomized fuel spray from the injector.

  3. Combustion Stage: The combustion gases rapidly expand, generating significant thermal energy that drives the piston downward and rotates the crankshaft, delivering power output. After combustion, the remaining exhaust gases are expelled during the exhaust stroke.
